About Yoga

Yoga means different things to different people. By definition, the Sanskrit word "yoga" means "union." In the Western world, most people think of yoga as a physical fitness system. One of the amazing things about yoga is that it is up to the practitioner to decide what yoga is. For a father, yoga can refer to the act of mindful, heart-oriented parenting. For a business woman, yoga can refer to making choices that are responsible and sustainable for present and future generations. Yoga can be about how we connect to the present moment while conversing with a new friend. Or an old friend. Ultimately, yoga is about connecting to our most authentic selves and letting that shine in the world around us.

Asana is one way to experience yoga, or union. Asana is the Sanaskrit word for posture. Asana is also a way to be playful, creative and expressive. It is a way to deepen awareness of our body and to heal the body. The benefits of yoga are numerous, including:

  • Yoga decreases blood pressure, pulse and respiration, cholesterol, stress, anxiety and depression.
  • Yoga increases metabolism, circulation, immunity and cardiovascular endurance, vitamin C levels, red blood cell levels.
  • Yoga increases health of internal organs, tolerance for pain, strength, energy, body awareness.
  • Yoga improves endocrine, lymphatic and gastrointestinal functioning.
  • Yoga slows the aging process.
  • Yoga improves sexuality, concentration, memory, social skills, attention, self-acceptance.
  • Yoga helps prevent osteoporosis, alzheimers, heart disease, type II diabetes.
  • Yoga can help reduce or alleviate the symptoms of carpal tunnel, asthma, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cancer, muscular dystrophy, migraines, scoliois, epilepsy, sciatica, obsessive compulsive disorder, constipation, allergies, menopause and back pain.
